Sh4rYn D: Flamboyant, Gifted
by Diana J Knutson
It would take at least one oxymoron to describe Sharyn D.
She is a gracefully flamboyant hi-bred diva! A very beautiful, intelligent and gifted woman.
Sharyn was born in St. Paul and reared in Rosemount, Minnesota. Her father has a PhD in Aeronautical Engineering. When he was a student at the University of Minnesota, he was in a program for promising students. There were 25 houses provided for families from all over the world.
Sharyn always loved music; she sang in church but considers Rock music her primary influence. She said people have always asked her ‘who invented you’? She doesn’t classify her music. Sometimes when she writes she doesn’t like to listen to anything because she doesn’t want any little “dinkies” to stay in her head that would influence her in any one style.
In 11th grade Sharyn was accepted to the U of M on a scholarship in speech-communications and journalism. She had enough credits to finish high school early. Her mother was a model and schoolteacher. The first “Black” woman on the cover of Ebony magazine. She says her mother is gorgeous. They have Native American roots, but refers to herself as Hi Bred being a mix of Cherokee, Irish, Jewish, German and Black.

Sharyn went to New York for a fashion show. At this time, Sharyn was already modeling and designing her own clothes. According to Sharyn, after the fashion show party a guy in a red leather jump suit came up to her and said ‘Ah tres magnifique -you must come to Paris and work with me.’ It was the famous fashion designer Thierry Mugler.
She didn’t like the winter so she went to Paris. Mugler remembered her (from NY) and everything started. She modeled for top designers such as D&G, Versace and Issey Miyake.
Sharyn started working on her musical talents when her BFFs boyfriend gave her a synthesizer, a microphone, everything else she needed! She set it up in her apartment (in Italy) and began writing. She started taking her music around. When American groups would come to Europe, they wanted American singers to open for them. Sharyn says she got opening -act gigs because she was the ‘weirdo’ GlamRock. They called her the female Prince thinking she looked like him. She and her groups did performances & events with Grace Jones, David Bowie, Gloria Gaynor, Gypsie Kings & Tupac to name a few.
Sharyn then went to Holland. She was staying with a Dutch couple, Sugar and Spice. Sugar was real upset one day, she’d been in a car accident and Sharyn asked her “Why haven’t you filled out the accident report?
An accident report had not been filled out because Sugar was dyslexic. Sharyn had worked at Wilder School and knew the signs. She told Sugar there was nothing wrong with her.
Thus Sharyn named her next group ¡DysLeXyA!….another perspective..

Sharyn came back to Minnesota and has a new group. She is working on a new CD which will feature all original work written by her. Her vision of music is very individual, and she wants to go beyond the commercialism that has taken over the American masses. Her current CDs do have a definite European sound, but they are completely unique.
Sharyn has the vision, the talent and the personality to do anything she puts her mind to. She is a true American Idol.
